Гагарин (в лучшем случае) должен был его заменить. Ильюшин должен был полететь 7-го апреля 1961 года на корабле «Россия». Слишком поспешная подготовка взяла свое, и космонавт на орбите потерял сознание. С Земли его не смогли привести в чувства, и в центре управления полетами было принято единственное возможное решение: начать автоматический спуск.

Корабли «Восток» были сконструированы таким образом, что космонавт перед приземлением должен был катапультироваться. И сделать это, видимо, можно было только находясь в сознании. Таким образом, Ильюшин упал вместе с кабиной и получил тяжелые травмы. Из-за неблагоприятных условий полет ко всему прочему завершился в Китае.
